WASHINGTON, D.C.—Georgia/South Ossetia was anything but quiet. There had been skirmishes since the 1992-93 war, and small arms fire and sporadic shelling in the weeks before 7 August. Georgia claims Russian soldiers and armored vehicles, in place ahead of time, entered South Ossetia on the 7th, escalating the situation and causing Georgia to end its self-declared cease fire. Russia says the troops arrived on the 8th in response to Georgian attacks. Now a team from the OSCE says Georgia, in fact, started the war. "If there had been any (Russian) provocations, the response from the Georgian side was disproportionate."
The nature of the report has implications for Israel.
What are the obligations of a small country facing ongoing aggressive behavior from a larger or more powerful one? How long does it have to be threatened - even if its enemy doesn't cross the border - before it can strike to protect itself? Before the 1967 War, Israel watched the Egyptian buildup in the Sinai and the rabid fury of Egyptian crowds calling for the annihilation of the Jews. In 1973, Israel knew Syria was preparing for an attack and the IDF sought permission to strike first. Then-Prime Minister Golda Meir said "No," preferring to absorb the first blow to ensure that the United States (and others) would not brand Israel the aggressor, costing it necessary political support. Soldiers paid with their lives for that decision and Israel came close at points to losing the war.
Today, Israel faces both a war of attrition and a potentially existential threat. Israel has responded to both, thus far, with restraint, begging the question, "for how long?"
Hamas, with support from Iran, is shelling Israel with increasingly large and accurate weapons; Ashkelon, with more than 100,000 people is in range. When the JINSA Flag & General Officers trip visited IDF commanders in the South and leadership in Tel Aviv, they were told that at some point, large-scale Israeli ground action would become inevitable. "Iran in Gaza is unacceptable." Several IDF officials recalled that the Passover Seder bombing in 2003 precipitated the Israeli entry into Jenin to wipe out the strongholds of suicide bombers in the "second intifada," implying that only an attack with large-scale casualties would induce a major Israeli response. So Israel responds as it can to Hamas shelling of civilian neighborhoods, waiting for things to become "bad enough" before it accepts the label of "aggressor" with a "disproportionate" response.
Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities and threatening Israel with genocide. The "international community" has been singularly unsuccessful in slowing or stopping Iran's progression. Israel (and the United States) has made it clear that the "military option" remains on the table, but the decision to exercise it will be made only when all other options are exhausted - in part because if Israel fires first, no matter how verbally belligerent Iran has been and no matter how close to nuclear weapons capability it has come, Israel would be the aggressor if, like the Georgians, it fired first.
So Israel waits. If it responds to provocation too soon, it runs the risk of being Georgia. If it waits too long, it runs the risk of something else.

Israeli Hammer Talk at Soille Hebrew Day School
SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—
Hebrew Day’s Grade 7 & 8 students were treated to a special presentation by Rabbi Shalom Hammer on Monday, broadening their perspective on serving in the Israeli army. Appearing in Israeli military fatigues, Rabbi Hammer used humor and insight to engage the students in a lively discussion about sanctifying G‐d’s name, not through dying but through living. He described his 12 years of military service in terms of interacting with fellow Jewish soldiers – once making Kiddush on Friday night at an outpost where it had never been done before. His talk shed new light on the value of military service in Israel by observant people and affirmed to the students the great potential each has in creating a Kiddush Hashem. An interesting sidebar is that Rabbi Hammer’s older brother was born here in San Diego while his father served in the U.S. Navy and his parents played an important role in launching Hebrew Day School in 1963.

A Thanksgiving appeal from Jewish Family Service

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)--Just three days until Thanksgiving, and we're in real danger of missing our goal of providing Thanksgiving Food Baskets to more than 600 families---three times more than last year. With times as tough as they are, missing our goal would be a devastating blow for too many people.
We urgently need your help to make sure families in need have food this Thanksgiving.
I know it's a difficult time -- but our community always meets these challenges. That's why I'm certain generous friends like you will step up and help your neighbors in need this holiday . After all, this is the season of giving. And it's never been more important for you to help. In fact, the USDA just reported a dramatic increase in the number of Americans facing hunger. Overall, one in eight Americans struggles with hunger.
Please, give as generously as you can . Nobody should have an empty plate on Thanksgiving -- nobody should have to face hunger.

KIBBUTZ RUHAMA, Israel --In 1944 when the first settlers of Kibbutz Ruhama arrived, the importance of developing agriculture in this area so close to the desert was very clear to them. It would help build a homeland for the Jewish people. From then until now the kibbutz has earned most of its living by agriculture.
The size of the fields are 20,000 dunam (4,942 acres ). Of these 8,000 dunam are irrigated fields which produce potatoes, sunflowers, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, chick peas for hummus and more.
On the non irrigated fields, the main crop is wheat.
The current month of November is the season for sowing. For this, all possible manpower is utilized in order to get the seeds in before the serious rainfalls begins. This requires the work to be carried out around the clock, even at night.
Hopefully, this winter Kibbutz Ruhama will be blessed with lots of rain and there will be results for the hard work done. Both the amount of rainwater-- and when it falls—are crucial for the outcome of the crops.
The soil is another important consideration. If it is not able to hold onto the amount of water it receives, the rainwater erodes quickly into the river valleys (wadi’s).
In an attempt to partly solve this problem, Ruhama farmers over the last decade have connected to the seeding machine a device which makes small pits in the ground between the seeds. The idea is to “catch” the rain in these pits, thereby preventing it from sinking into the field and from disappearing into the wadis. The process creates small shallow craters in the rows of the seeds.
Recently, farmers have been practicing the “minimum cultivation” method in an effort to prevent rainwater loss. You need to prevent early cultivation that damages the crust of the soil and makes it erode with the rain. So what the farmers here do is that they sow and fertilize at the same time.
At the end of the summer, after the harvest, the fields were prepared for the next season of cultivating and fertilizing.
Then, in September two big containers arrived at Kibbutz Ruhama from Australia with parts for the new seeding machinery.
This resulted from several visits to Australia by Rami Polaco, who is assigned to the kibbutz’s program for non-irrigated fields. Polaco has worked the fields all his life. He is the son of Meir Polaco who still works in the agriculture though he is approaching 80.
Rami Polanco is joined by his son Daniel in the enterprise—and the future continues for the Polaco family with Daniel having two small sons.
The project surrounding the new sowing machine is a joint one between Kibbutz Ruhama and Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture.
There are no machines like this one in Israel; it is as unique as it looks.
The machinery was custom made to fit the demands of the farmers of Kibbutz Ruhama. Two companies in Australia collaborated on the project.
One is Gason, which specializes in air seeders and the other is Gessner, which specializes in agricultural machinery. The two machines combine a pneumatic seeding and fertilization process with an engagement tool that will make places in the soil for the seeds and the fertilizer.

The price of a beauty like this is one million shekels. The Ministry of Agriculture contributed 40 percent of the cost in a pilot project for what is hoped will prove practical for agriculture throughout Israel.

The machine has three containers on the top of its first trailer. One container has seeds, another has phosphorous and the third, nitrogen. The other machine has numerous disks connected by tubes to provide the seeds and fertilizer.
When the machine drives over the fields, it makes a thin cut in the soil, and puts the seed in together with the needed fertilizers in a way that avoids corrupting and eroding the soil. Because it combines many functions, the machinery saves manpower, money and fuel.
Riding out through the fields on my bike recently, I met the guys working with the seeding machine--one of them being my own son, Oren Hadar, whose job includes refilling the containers with seeds, phosphorous and nitrogen.

Oren just finished two weeks ago his three-year army service and started to work in the agricultural area of Kibbutz Ruhama in order to earn some money before going off traveling around the World.
Ziv Regev, a young man who completed the Army eight months ago, is in charge of the tractor and the connected seeding machinery. He invited me to sit next to him for a demonstration of the new machinery.
The gadgetry in the modern John Deere tractor is quite impressive. A small personal computer (shown at left) is near the steering wheel. The computer has complete information of the fields we are now sowing. It has been programmed with data about the crops, seeding and fertilization from previous years.
It shows how many seeds are sown, how much fertilizer goes in the soil if and when there are problems or potential problems concerning the process.
Its programming will facilitate the use the exact amounts in each location. Furthermore, it calculates outputs, providing drawings, statistics and tables. Back in the office, the team can utilize this data to develop strategies to obtain better yields.
The driver is able to vary the amounts of seeds and fertilizer according to a field’s soil composition.
An automatic steering device coupled with a global positioning system (GPS) enable Ziv to map his route through the field. The seeding and the fertilization will proceed along the straightest lines you can ever imagine without any overlapping or crooked rows--something a human
hand is not able to provide.
The tractor drives itself from one end of the field to the other, with the driver only becoming involved at the turns.
Three tractors were required to do similar work in a neighboring field and one can imagine the envy felt by the fellow workers when watching Ziv doing his job all by himself.
I asked Ziv if it is not boring sitting so many hours a day in the cockpit of a tractor that most of the time does the job done by itself. He nodded slightly, but added that he derived satisfaction from receiving and assembling the new machine and in monitoring the on-board computer device.
Many guys finishing Army service go to work in the agriculture. One of the reasons is to earn money to go travelling or studying. Another reason is that it is valued as "preferable work" ("avodah meudefet") which entitles workers to a government stipend.
Ziv told me he plans to visit Australia, the birthplace of this remarkable machinery, in February 2009.
The farmers of Kibbutz Ruhama do their outmost to strengthen and develop agriculture as a way of protecting and preserving the national soil of Israel.
SAN DIEGO—In a few weeks we will celebrate Chanukah, the first recorded struggle and victory for religious freedom in the history of the world. The search for freedom is a constant and central theme during Chanukah and in all our holidays and festivals. As we light the Chanukah candles, we celebrate the bravery of the Maccabees and their army, who although small in number, by waging guerilla warfare, (also a first in history) succeeded in overcoming far superior forces of the Greek-Syrian ruler, Antiochus IV.
The amazing victory by the small Maccabean army took place in ancient Palestine 167 years before the birth of Christianity, and over 500 years before the creation of Islam. It is awesome to conjecture, that if the Maccabees had been defeated, (horrible thought) and the Jewish people had been crushed, Judaism might have vanished from history. Consequently, since both Christianity and Islam drew from seeds of Jewish traditions and the Bible, neither might have arisen, and the world’s religious history would have been dramatically altered.
We Jews observe Jewish holidays and festivals as milestones in our calendar, to remind us to be vigilant in preserving freedom for ourselves and the entire world. We celebrate the importance of freedom for Jews and all people, not only on Chanukah, but also during the Festival of Passover, and even on Friday night, when we chant the Kiddush (blessing of wine).
In universal terms, the Maccabean struggle is not over. Chanukah is a reminder of that struggle and urges us to pursue equal rights for all people. Once a minor holiday, Chanukah has become a major celebration as we continue to strive for a world where the oppressive forces of hunger, sickness, ignorance and prejudice will no longer tyrannize any people.
To synthesize the importance of striving for freedom, Dr. Morton Gold, and lyricist, Cantor Harold Lerner, wrote a powerful Oratorio, Haggadah, Search For Freedom, for solo, chorus and full orchestra. It is in English and tells the full story of Passover with exciting contemporary music, and lyrics relating to our present day problems. The oratorio also introduces new and appealing melodies for Dayenu and L’shana Haba B’rushalayim”, which I hope to share with you next Passover.
I was privileged to have performed the full oratorio with the St Paul’s Episcopal Church Choir, accompanied by the former Jewish Community Orchestra, under the direction of my good friend, David Amos. The lyrics of the opening song of the oratorio, Search for Freedom, are not only appropriate for Passover, but equally for Chanukah, when we light candles, sing and recall the wondrous stories of our people’s struggle to preserve freedom for all mankind.
“Hear us O God, King of the world: Listen to the song of our search for freedom. You exalt us through the gift of Torah, the source of wisdom. You bless us with your festive days, the season for thanks and rejoicing. Freedom is the song of love. One God, one world, one earth, one flesh. Oh let it be one freedom for all, a white freedom, a black freedom, a yellow freedom, a red freedom, a freedom of body, of mind, of spirit and soul. Let all who are slaves be free. Let all men be free! Halleluyah”

Hillel’s first regular Membership meeting after the very successful Interfaith Seder was held on April 11, at Scripps Cottage on the campus. It was devoted to the philosophy and personality of one of the greatest men of our time, Albert Schweitzer. The speaker was Dr. Kurt Bergel from Chapman College in Los Angeles. Dr. Bergel spoke on “Albert Schweitzer and the Ethics of Judaism.” He pointed out many striking parallels between the concepts of this philosopher and the ethical principles of the Jewish tradition.
On April 25th, the Hillel members assembled at the Temple Center for their second membership meeting of the month of April. They first listened to an address by Mr. Kaufman, editor of the Southwestern Jewish Press, about “My Two Years with the D.P.’s in Europe.” The talk was enlivened by many dramatic incidents from the experiences of the speaker. It revealed many unknown aspects of the plight of the D.P.’s, the attitude of the American military personnel, and the reaction of the German population. After the talk nominations for the new officers of the coming school year took place.
The remainder of the semester is planned out in detail already. A brief glance ahead reveals the following events. On May 14, at the next membership meeting, a representative of the Vocational Service Bureau of the B’nai B’rith in Los Angeles will speak on problems of vocational guidance for Jewish students and election of officers will take place. On the 18th Hillel will sponsor one of its Campus Open forums about “The Welfare State versus Free Enterprise.” On May 21, full Hillel members will go on a hayride outing. The last function of the semester will the the Thrid Annaul Hillel Awards Banquet on June 11th. Main speaker will be Rabbi Jehudah M. Cohen, Pacific Regional Director of Hillel, who will speak on “Old and New Responsibilities in Hillel.”

The place… Hotel del Coronado; the time… last Saturday even; the event… Phi Kappa Tau’s semi-formal annual May Queen Dance. The ballroom was made alluring by the presence of different nominees for queen which represented the various fraternities of State College. Noteworthy among these lovelies of the feminine sex was Miss Lennie Klug, Beta Tau choice who was runner up to the coveted title of May Queen. Miss Klug was escorted by Beta Taus’ Richard Silberman, executive director and exclusive distributor of electronic repeller rays.
Here’s a little gem overheard in a civics class, which defines the various forms of government.
Socialism—If you have two cows, you give one to your neighbor.
Communism—If you have to cows, you give them to the government and the government then gives you some milk.
Fascism—If you have two cows, you keep the cows and give the milk to the government, then the government sells you some milk.
Nazism—If you have two cows, the government shoots you and keeps thecows.
New Dealism—If you have two cows, you shoot one and milk the other, then pour the milk down the drain.
Capitalism – If you have two cows, you sell one and buy a bull.
May 7, Sunday, was Founders Day at State and many fellas and gals took the opportunity afford them to take mom and pop out to school and show them around the beautiful campus. There were demonstrations of scientific advancements, special programs, and all told, the students and their folks who were there had a wonderful time.
Next time “You Name It” will probably have a guest editor, probably a female student on campus. You’re in for a big surprise so watch the column next issue for a guest editor.

Congregation Beth Israel will observe the annual Ceremony of Confirmation on the eve of Shovuos Sunday, May 21st, at 7:30 p.m.
Fourteen boys and girls will ascend the altar to be confirmed in the faith of Israel. The service will be enhanced by special music arranged by Cantor Miller. Immediately following the service a lovely reception will be given for the Congregation by the parents of the Confirmants in the Temple Center.
Members and friends of the Congregation are reminded that the temple doors will be closed at 7:30, when the class will enter the temple in processional. Latecomers will be seated in the balcony, and only at specified intervals in the service. Therefore all are urged to be in their seats no later hat 7:25 p.m.

The Samuel I. Fox Lodge meeting of April 25th was the Social of the month. President Ernest Green introduced the many guests in attendance. The San Diego Bay City women’s Lodge had a quorum of their own at the meeting. An announcement was made that the Bowling League officially begins May 2nd and runs until Sept. 19th. The following men comprise the bowling team: Lou Robbins, Irving N. Cohen, Sol Randall, Marshall Goodfriend, Harry Rivers and Maurice Cohen.
Short committee reports were given so that the meeting would be given over to the guest speaker, Sergeant R. B. Lukehart of the San Diego Police Department. His talk was on Juvenile Delinquency. A question and answer period followed which kept Sgt. Lukehart busy. Program chairman Joe Spatz was congratulated on being able to obtain such an interesting speaker.
Matilda Green baked several cakes in honor of President Ernest Green who, like Jack Benny, admitted to age 39.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, May 23rd at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Guests are welcome.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Georgia/South Ossetia was anything but quiet. There had been skirmishes since the 1992-93 war, and small arms fire and sporadic shelling in the weeks before 7 August. Georgia claims Russian soldiers and armored vehicles, in place ahead of time, entered South Ossetia on the 7th, escalating the situation and causing Georgia to end its self-declared cease fire. Russia says the troops arrived on the 8th in response to Georgian attacks. Now a team from the OSCE says Georgia, in fact, started the war. "If there had been any (Russian) provocations, the response from the Georgian side was disproportionate."
SAN DIEGO (Press Release)—
Hebrew Day’s Grade 7 & 8 students were treated to a special presentation by Rabbi Shalom Hammer on Monday, broadening their perspective on serving in the Israeli army. Appearing in Israeli military fatigues, Rabbi Hammer used humor and insight to engage the students in a lively discussion about sanctifying G‐d’s name, not through dying but through living. He described his 12 years of military service in terms of interacting with fellow Jewish soldiers – once making Kiddush on Friday night at an outpost where it had never been done before. His talk shed new light on the value of military service in Israel by observant people and affirmed to the students the great potential each has in creating a Kiddush Hashem. An interesting sidebar is that Rabbi Hammer’s older brother was born here in San Diego while his father served in the U.S. Navy and his parents played an important role in launching Hebrew Day School in 1963.
KIBBUTZ RUHAMA, Israel --In 1944 when the first settlers of Kibbutz Ruhama arrived, the importance of developing agriculture in this area so close to the desert was very clear to them. It would help build a homeland for the Jewish people. From then until now the kibbutz has earned most of its living by agriculture.
The machine has three containers on the top of its first trailer. One container has seeds, another has phosphorous and the third, nitrogen. The other machine has numerous disks connected by tubes to provide the seeds and fertilizer.
The gadgetry in the modern John Deere tractor is quite impressive. A small personal computer (shown at left) is near the steering wheel. The computer has complete information of the fields we are now sowing. It has been programmed with data about the crops, seeding and fertilization from previous years.
